Exam Room Techniques

The following techniques used in the exam room may ease the pressure and pain of exams:

1.  Settle and compose yourself.

2.  Read right through the paper.  (5 minutes)

  1. Check instructions.

  2. Underline key words to questions - one and two lines.

  3. Choose your best questions, using a symbol system.

 3.  Plan your time.

  1. Divide according to marks per question.

  2. Write down finishing time for each question.

  3. If possible, plan in 10 minutes, checking time at end.

             4.  Plan your answers.

  1. Brief notes on main ideas and important details.

  2. Linear, spider or pattern note outline.

  3. Outline all answers at beginning (if doubtful of remembering); or one at a time or a few answers together.

  4. Leave space after each question.

            5.  Set Priorities.

  1. Answer your best question first.

  2. Stick to the time allowed for each question: marks for two half questions are worth more than one.

  3. Stick to what the questions are asking.

6.  Write.

  1. Simply, in short sentences, checking spellings.

  2. Legibly.

7.  At the end of the exam.

  1. If there is time left, check your answers.

  2. Minimize your conversations.
