About the Student Library Group

Comments from past members...

Teresa Williams (Student of Theatre Studies, English Literature, Theology and Sociology) commented: "I joined the SLG because I enjoyed studying in the library and I wanted to see how the library works.  The skills that you acquire are very useful, especially when it comes to writing CVs or applying to universities.  I find the activities interesting, and it gives you experience in things that other people don't have the chance to do."

Sara Brown (Student of Biology, Chemistry and Applied Mathematics) commented: "Members can select from the task list the sort of skills they want to develop.  This means they can be tailor-made to suit your course of studies and your interests."

David Bennett (Former SLG Secretary; Student of Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry) commented: "Becoming computer literate isn't difficult.  The secretarial skills that I have learnt as SLG Secretary have proved useful.  Group meetings are held regularly for about half an hour.  They're friendly and informal with everyone chipping in with the discussions."

Jenny Kheir (Student of Psychology, English Language and Biology) commented: "I joined the SLG because I was constantly in the library, and I thought that it would be useful to develop a better understanding of the library's facilities.  I have gained experience of dealing with people which will help me in the future."

Introduction

The College library caters for the needs of both students and staff, and aims to provide centralized learning resources to meet the requirements of its users.

The Student Library Group (SLG) was formed in 1994 to provide the opportunity for students to assist in the development of the resource facilities and to gain skills in library administration.  Members work alongside the library staff and provide a valuable perspective on library life.

Benefits of SLG Membership

The skills which you will develop as a member of the SLG will be useful, whether you intend going on to university, or to seek employment.

Everyone must at some stage use libraries, and as an SLG member, you will learn the basic skills need to access the information you require quickly and efficiently.

SLG Tasks

SLG members have the opportunity to carry out a number of different tasks, primarily in the library.  These allow you to develop a number of useful skills.  Members can learn how to:

Please note the list is not exhaustive.  Most of the tasks are practically- based and can be carried out individually or as part of a group.  Full instructions are provided by the library staff.

SLG Record of Achievement

This is a College library initiative where members receive a record at the end of the each academic year listing the tasks they have undertaken and the skills they have acquired.  This provides a valuable record of your achievements whilst in the SLG.

SLG Secretary

The role of the SLG Secretary rotates between the members of the group and is voluntary.  The secretary carries out the following tasks:

Coordinates and distributes SLG information   Keeps the minutes of group meetings
Maintains SLG archive and notice board   Represents the SLG at internal College meetings and at external meetings
Chairs SLG meetings as necessary   Monitors SLG email
Assists with the recruitment of new members   Represents the SLG at internal College meetings and at external events

SLG Meetings

A group meetings are held at regular intervals in order to discuss SLG matters and to form policies on the issues raised.  The meetings also allow you to get to know the other members.

Notification of SLG meetings will be found in the College Bulletin.  Minutes and agendas are kept by the Library Desk and are available upon request.

Representing SLG

SLG members are often invited to take part in other College meetings.  Members actively participate in the Student Services Committee meetings which plays an important part in College life.

SLG members are also encouraged to become part of the Editorial Committee, so that they can learn how to edit articles for "The Review".  As with all College students, members can contribute articles for publication.

SLG Office

SLG members have access to the SLG Office in the library, where they can study, read, and make themselves coffee and tea.

SLG Projects

SLG members are encouraged to propose projects for the group, which will ultimately benefit their fellow students.  For example, members were involved in the design and writing of these web pages for the College Intranet.

Enrolment

To enrol, please see the library staff for a membership form, and make a note of the date, time and place of the SLG meetings.

The Students' Charter

"...the strength of this community is made up of the strength of the individuals within it and we aim to provide an environment in which every student can best achieve their personal goals..."

Students can make their contributions to this College and to the wider community by joining the Student Library Group.

Copies of the SLG leaflet, written and designed by members of the SLG, are available in the Library.

A word from the current SLG Secretary, Matthew Short (Student of Mathematics, Physics and Economics):

"It's worth joining the SLG -  not only do you gain valuable skills for you CV, but it also gives you an insight into the running of the library. Just come in and ask, or Email the SLG"
